Organizing Content: A Deep Dive into WordPress Categories

Categories enable users to categorize content into distinct sections, allowing readers to easily find content on a single website. If no category is added, the category is uncategorized by default.

a) How to add categories

1. First, select “Posts” on the menu on the left side of the dashboard, then click the “Categories” button to add a new category.

2. Then, there are four fields to be filled when adding a new category.

  • Name: category name, must be unique
  • Slug: Use this in the URL to display your categories.
  • Parent: You can add subcategories to the category or not. This is optional.
  • Description: The description is optional. You can add a short description for your category.

3. Finally, click the Add New Category button, and your new category will be added on the right side of the page.

b) How to edit and delete category

1. First, select “Posts” on the menu on the left side of the dashboard, then click the “Categories” button to edit a category. Hover your mouse over the category you want to edit.

2. Next, there are three options for editing categories: Edit, Quick Edit, and Delete. You can change the category name, slug, parent, and description.

  • Edit: It allows you to edit all fields: name, slug, parent, and description.
  • Quick Edit: It only allows you to edit names and aliases.
  • Delete: It allows you to delete categories.

3.  Notes: The default category cannot be deleted; assign the default status to another category before deleting it.

c) How to convert category into tag

1. First, select “Tools” on the menu on the left side of the dashboard, then click the “Import” button to change category into tag and tag into category.

2. Then, click on the Install Now button in the Categories and Tags Converter part. After installation, click on Run Importer change category into tag and tag into category.

3. Finally, you can select any option before click the Convert Categories to Tags button to convert categories to tags or tags to categories.
