Advanced Techniques: eM Client IMAP Connectivity Issues in Smarter Mail

Setting up a new Smarter Mail account in eM Client using IMAP can sometimes fail due to NTLM errors in IMAP logs, indicating that the workstation configuration prevents modern NTLM authentication. This issue can be resolved by managing the LAN authentication level of the Windows user account.

a) How do I solve the eM client failure to connect to IMAP in Smarter Mail ?

1. First, enter MMC in the search box to open the MMC console.

Note: To access this utility, right-click on the icon and select “Run as administrator”.

2. Then, the console root appears empty, especially if you’ve never used MMC on your computer. To proceed, you will need to incorporate a snap-in, which is a straightforward process.

3. After that, navigate to the “File” menu at the top and select “Add/Remove Snap-in…” from the drop-down list.

4. Next, click on it and select “Add >” to move it to the “Selected snap-ins” group in a modal to add the Group Policy Object snap-in.

5. Then, assign the snap-in to an object, usually “Local Computer“, and click the “Finish” button to proceed to activate the Select Group Policy Object mode.

6. After that, click the OK button to see a new item under the root of the console: Local Computer Policy.

7. Next, edit security options in the Local Computer Policy snap-in by opening several sections to enable NTLM authentication and clicking the carets next to: Local Computer Policy, Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options

8. Then, navigate to the Security Options section and double-click the Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level to open the policy.

9. After that, navigate to the Local Security Settings and click the drop-down box to select Send LM & MTLM. If negotiated, use NTML2 session security.

10. Next, click Apply, and then click the OK button.

11. Finally, click the X in the upper-right corner and follow the prompts to save a new console configuration. The default name can be used without changing the save location. To make changes permanent, save the configuration. Click OK in Local Security Settings mode, and your changes will be saved.
