Granting Unique Permissions to a Folder in SharePoint Online Document Library: A Step-by-Step Guide

SharePoint folder permissions grant users full control over the website, allowing them to edit personal views, manage projects, delete, update, modify, and add user information, document libraries, and directories.

a) How to give unique permission to folders in SharePoint Online ?

1. First, open the document library and click on the ECB menu for the specific folder to which you want to give unique permissions.

2. Then, click Manage Access.

3. Next, the Manage Access page allows you to determine who has access to the folders in the SharePoint document library.

4. After that, you can click on the arrow and then click on Stop Sharing whose access you want to remove.

5. SharePoint site owners have default access to SharePoint document libraries’ folders, which can be removed by clicking the “Advanced” link, and SharePoint site members and visitor groups.

It will display the only the site owner has permission.

6. Then, click on the + icon and provide the username.

7. After that, click on the “Grant Access” button, and then you can see that the user has access to the folder.

8. Next, you can see here that if I log in with a different user, they won’t be able to see the other folders.

9. If I log in with a specific user, I can see the Finance folder.

b) How to give links in SharePoint Online Left Navigation ?

1. First, open the folder in your browser, copy the entire URL, and paste it into the left navigation.

2. The issue arises when other users, who do not have access to the folder, still see the link in the SharePoint Online left navigation.

3. Then I had to change the folder URL in the left navigation.

4. Finally, folders in the left navigation of SharePoint are visible only for specific user logins, while they are not visible for other logins.
