Mastering DNS Management: A Guide to cPanel’s Advanced Zone Editor

The Advanced Zone Editor is an advanced version of the previous one, allowing users to add, edit, or delete various types of records like A, AAAA, CNAME, SRV, and TXT. It also allows the configuration of TTL (Time to Live), which represents the time a DNS server can cache a resource record before discarding it.

a) How to reset zone files in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, find the Reset Zone File and click the More link button.

3. After that, select the checkbox for the Are you sure you want to erase all entries and revert to the default state?

4. Finally, click the Reset Zone File button to reset the zone file to its default state and a success message will appear if successful.

b) How to add an A record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the Add a Record section in the Advanced Zone Editor and choose “A” from the Type drop-down menu.

3. After that, enter the name and TTL value of your A record; if there is no special need, you can use the default value which is 14400 and the IP address recorded in the address text box.

4. Finally, click the Add Record button to save the record in the DNS entry.

c) How to add an AAAA record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the Add a Record section in the Advanced Zone Editor and choose the record type from the AAAA drop-down menu.

3. After that, enter the host name and TTL value in the Name text box, unless required and use the default value of 14400.

4. Next, enter the 128-bit address in the IPv6 address text box to bind the host name to a specific IPv6 address.

5. Finally, click the “Add Record” button to save the AAAA record in your DNS entry.

d) How to add a CNAME record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the Add a Record section and select the record type from the CNAME drop-down menu.

3. After that, enter your subdomain or alias for text input and provide the TTL value in the TTL text box, unless required and use the default value of 14400.

4. Next, enter a valid zone name or domain name in the CNAME text box to point an alias to a specific zone or domain.

5. Finally, click the Add Record button to save the CNAME record to your DNS entry.

e) How to add an SRV record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the Add a Record section and choose the record type SRV from the drop-down menu.

3. After that, enter the service name and protocol, followed by an underscore (_) and a dot (.) and provide the TTL value in the TTL text box, unless required which is 14400.

4. Next, provide the priority of the service; the lower the number in priority, the higher the priority of the service 0 (zero) has the highest priority and the weight of the service is used by zone administrators to distribute the load to multiple targets. 0 is the lowest load.

5. Then, enter the port where the service is actually being provided and the target, the name of the host that will receive the service.

6. Finally, click the Add Record button to add the SRV record to your DNS entries.

f) How to add a TXT record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the Add a Record section in the Advanced Zone Editor and choose the record type TXT from the drop-down menu.

3. After that, the TTL value should be entered in the TTL text box, with the default value being 14400 unless otherwise specified.

4. Next, enter TXT data which can be any type of text, SPF, or DKIM data.

5. Finally, click the “Add Record” button to add the TXT record to your DNS records.

g) How to edit or delete a DNS record in the cPanel Advanced Zone Editor

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Domains section to select Advanced Zone Editor tool or search for the Advanced Zone Editor tool in the search bar.

2. Then, navigate to the zone file records in the Advanced Zone Editor to edit or delete a DNS resource record.

3. After that, click on the Edit Link button to edit it.

4. Next, customize the record to your preferences and click the “Edit Record” button to save the changes.

5. To delete a record, click on the corresponding delete link button.

6. Finally, you will be prompted to confirm and then click the Delete button to delete the record.
