Advanced Techniques: Server Migration for Smarter Mail

Smarter Tools allows users to run two instances of their Smarter Mail license on two different servers for up to 30 days, after which the old license must be uninstalled and callbacks to the license server should cease.

Note:

  • To configure SSL or TLS on any port, export the certificate used, including the private key, from the origin server’s certificate store and import it into the new server’s personal folder in the certificate store.
  • To ensure successful deployment of the “exclude” service on a new server, it is crucial to install it on the original server before deploying it, as failure to do so may result in all emails being landed in the Proc folder.

a) How do I migrate Smarter Mail to a different server ?

1. First, install the same Smarter Mail version on the new server as on the old hardware.

Note: The Smarter Tools website provides access to older versions of Smarter Mail within your account.

2. Then, set up Smarter Mail in IIS on the new server.

3. Afterwards, stop the Smarter Mail service (MailService.exe) and any IIS sites or application pools on both servers.

4. Next, copy the settings folder from the old server to the new server, which is typically located at C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\Service\Settings.

5. Then, copy the domain name folder from the old server to the new server, which is typically located at C:\SmarterMail\Domains.

6. Afterwards, start the Smarter Mail service on the new server and any necessary IIS sites or application pools.

7. Next, log in and reactivate the software on the new server.

8. To update a domain’s path, you must modify the domains.json file accordingly.

9. To update your Smarter Mail settings and restart the service or server if your IP address or DNS information changes, please do so.
