Efficient Document Writing: A Guide to Smart Compose in Google Docs

If you have a G Suite account through your employer or school, you may have noticed that Google Docs has started suggesting words for you as you type. The feature, called Smart Compose, was first introduced to Gmail in 2018 and then to Google Docs in 2020.

a) How do I use Smart Compose in Google Docs?

1. First, start typing, and suggestions will appear as light gray text as you type.

2. Then, accept the suggestion by pressing the tab or right arrow key, and the suggested text will be added to the document, allowing you to continue typing.

3. If you don’t like a suggestion made by Smart Compose, simply ignore it and continue typing until the suggestion disappears.

b) How do I turn off Smart Compose in Google Docs?

1. First, click “Tools” and then “Preferences“.

2. Then, uncheck Show smart compose suggestions.

3. Finally, click OK to close the suggestion window.
