09

Why do I receive spam emails?

Once your domain has been exposed to the public, there is a high possibility that it would also exposed to the spammer.  Therefore, once your domain has been exposed to them, it is very likely that you will receive the spam emails that they sent.

10

How did my domain name could be exposed?

There are a few possibilities how your domain could be exposed to the spammer.  The possibilities are:

- your domain also sends out newsletter to user

- you may have  registered your email address in surveys, online membership, contest and   etc.

- Information provider may have your details and they sell to the spammers for income.

11

My email address is very unique, how did they find out?

Spammers do not need o know your full email address,  they only require your domain name.  The reason is because they will send out massive emails without knowing whether the email address are valid or invalid as they have an application to send out random email addresses.

12

How does it work?

All emails to your domain will have to go through our SpamFilter gateway first before reaching to the mail server.  At the SpamFilter gateway, all emails will tag as Spam or not a spam at the header with this statement "X-Spam-Status: Yes" or "X-Spam-Status: No".  At the SpamFilter gateway, the "X-Spam-Status: Yes/No" will be generated by using the calculation method.  If the result of the calculation is more than 5.0 then the tag will be "X-Spam-Status: Yes", if it less than 5.0 then it would be "X-Spam-Status: No".  Emails which is tag with "X-Spam-Status:Yes" will be drop into Junk Mail folder, where as the emails which is tag with "X-Spam-Status: No" will be drop into the Mail folder.  Therefore, you will not receive you spam emails if you do not retrieve any emails from Junk Mail folder.

13

What are methods used to categorize spam emails?

By using all the best methods to block spam, SpamFilter provides comprehansive spam-blocking and and anti-virus protection for your company.  Below are the primary algorithms we employ to block spam.  We generally target approximately 99% blockage.

Blacklisting of websites & domains: SpamFilter maintain an up to date list of the largest and most aggressive known spammers.  This list is maintained by both SpamFilter and other anti-spam groups.  This list is automatically updated on each SpamFilter Spam Firewall.

Keyword scanning of emails: Our scanning methods include a scoring system such that emails are scored based on a number of criteria.  If the score is above a threshold, then that email is flagged as spam.  The SpamFilter team constantly monitors and updates these keywords based on current activity so there is virtually no lost messages.

Checksum technology: SpamFilter monitors email traffic through the Internet and uses checksum technology to keep track of the number of times a particular message has appeared on the Internet.  If a message has appeared over a certain number of times, it is categorized as known spam.  Checksums of known spam messages are utilized by Spamfilter to block spam messages.

Message authenticity checking: Several algorithms are utilized to verify the authenticity of a message.  Some of these are simple checks to verify that the "from address" is authentic.  Some are more complex relating to SMTP protocol.

Blacklists and Whitelists: Domains, IP's, and email addresses can be blocked or whitelisted (allow through).

Rate controls: Utilized to stop denial of service attacks as well as dictionary based spam attacks. These attachments are also scanned using the built-in Anti-Virus protection.

File type attachment blocking: Known malicious file types are blocked from entering your e-mail.  These attachments are also scanned using the built-in Anti-Virus protection.

Anti-Virus Protection: In addition to anti-spam protection, SpamFilter provides protection against e-mail based threat such as malicious viruses and worms, which is where 95%+ of the viruses originate.  This additional measure it built-in to our service and updates on a hourly basis to ensure the latest definitions are in place.

Can't spam just be filtered by its "obvious" content?

While a person can easily recognize spam, it is not easy for computers because they do not "understand" language. Spammers have also learned to defeat most content filters based on phrases and keywords.  While you may see "free money" or "Viagra" on the screen, the email message may not even contain that phrase; instead, complex HTML code visually places those two words next to each other.  Without a vision system, a computer cannot recognize this obvious phase therefore, all the methods above to categorize spam emails are essential.

15

Will spam mails be saved anywhere?

All e-mails will be sent to the mail server no matter it is a spam mail or a normal email.  Messages, that are declared to be spam, will be move into the web mail's Junk Mail folder.  This spam emails in the JunkMail folder will be kept for 7 days before deleting it.  Therefore, if you would like to know the amount of spam emails you have received, you may always login to the web mail to check.

16

This is ONLY for SPAM filter subscriber.

18

Sometimes Spamfilter doesn'trecognize spam mail. Why?

The reason you receive some of the spam emails is because the SpamFilter engine requires time to learn.  The SpamFilter is a smart learning tool.  Even though the SpamFilter engine is updated periodically with new type of spam emails, it requires your co-operation to help it learn the new type of spam email that you receive to the email address that is provided in the notification email sent to you signed up for the SpamFilter services.

19

I have send the spam emails I receive to the specific address, but I am still getting the same spam email.  Why?

Yes, even though you have send the spam mail that you received to the specific email address, the SpamFilter engine may have not recognize it as spam.  Therefore, you may require sending a few more of this type of message to get it classified as"spam".  The classification algorithm weights its result based on the number of times it has seen a particular clue, so that clues unique to the type of message may need a few more instances to become 'convincing".

20

Sometimes I cannot receive my normal-mails as well.  Why?

Have you check in the JunkMail folder in the web mail?  If you find your normal emails in the JunkMail folder is because was categorized as a spam email.  There are a lot of reasons why a normal mail was categorized as a spam email.  It maybe caused by the mail server or the send email address has been blacklisted or has a history of conducting spam activities or the content of the messages has spam keywords which will be filtered by the SpamFilter engine or any of the above method stated above.

21

I would like to receive the Spam Mail in my Microsoft Outlook, how can I configure it?

You may choose the IMAP option rather than the POP option while configuring your account in the mail client to synchronize all folders available in the web mail (including the Junk Mail folder) in to your Microsoft Outlook/Microsoft Outlook Express or any other mail client.  With this option enabled, you may download all spam emails from web mail into your mail client.
